WebP File Format

What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the web faster.

You can read more about WebP here.

WebP is available in Designer Pro+/Web Designer+, and Web Designer Premium from version 18 onwards.

Exporting to WebP

You can export your selection, page contents or the whole page to WebP by going to File > Export WebP

Here you can set the various options:

Selection: Exports the currently selected object/s

Page contents: Exports all the contents on the page

Page: Exports all the contents on the page and the page itself

Transparent background: Makes any areas not covered by the selection transparent

Encoding: WebP supports both Lossy and Lossless encoding. Use this option to set the encoding.

Quality: sets the quality level of the image. Higher quality levels also increases the file size.

Note: This quality is similar to that which is found on the JPEG export option, but it is not the same. WebP employs a different compression technique, so 75% quality will look different on WebP as compared to JPEG

File Size: The estimated file size of your exported image.

Including WebP images when you publish or export

Xara can export to WebP and use it as the primary image format for your websites or presentations. To do so:

1) Click on Utilities > Web Properties

2) Under the 'Website' tab, check the option 'Include WebP images'

This will export all your images as WebP and use them by default. Xara will still export a copy of all your images as PNG or JPG (see below) as a fall-back for use in browsers that do not support WebP.

Please note: This will increase the time it takes to export your website. If you check this option and republish, it will have to do a full publish again rather than quick publish.
