Managing presentation steps

You can typically manage presentation steps by:

  • Right clicking an object in a step and choosing Presentation then choosing your required option from the sub-menu that appears
  • Using the buttons on the Presentation toolbar
  • Using the Page & Layer Gallery

Viewing step contents

Sometimes you may want a clearer view of exactly which objects are in a step. You can either use the Jump to option in the Presentation toolbar to take you to a particular step or layer, or else use the Page & Layer Gallery.

For ease of navigation, the Jump to menu will only display the Background/MouseOff layer and the presentation steps. If you need to select another layer (MouseOver, Page Background, Pasteboard Background) simply select it in the Page and Layer Gallery and it will be displayed as the current layer in the Jump to menu dropdown.

If you click on a step in the Page & Layer Gallery all the steps above your selected step will be hidden and all the steps below will be visible thus giving you a precise view of your position in the presentation as shown on the canvas. This is also true if you select a step using the Jump to option. You can still hide or reveal any steps in the presentation by clicking on the eye icon.

Additionally you can click on the "S" (Solo) icon next to the step you want to view, to show only that step on the canvas. Click the icon again to return to normal view.

Note that the Background in the Jump to menu is referred to as the MouseOff layer in the Page and Layer Gallery.

Moving objects from one step to another

You can move objects from one step to another step in one of three ways:

  • In the Page & Layer Gallery, click and drag the object(s) from one step to another or right click the object(s) and choose Move to current layer.
  • Right click the object(s) and choose "Presentation" > "Move to Step" then choose the number of the step you want to move the object(s) to, or Background if you want to move the objects to the MouseOff layer or New step to move to a brand new step.
  • Use cut and paste to move objects from one step to another. Cut the object (Ctrl+X), then go to the Jump to drop down menu on the Presentation Toolbar to select the step you want and then paste (Ctrl+V) or paste in place (Ctrl+Shift+V).

Changing step order

The order in which steps are revealed is the order in which the steps appear in the Page & Layer Gallery, as indicated by the step numbers. You can click and drag steps above or below each other in the Page & Layer Gallery until all steps are in the order you want.

Deleting objects from a step

Right click the object and choose Cut or Delete, or in the Page & Layer Gallery right click the object and choose Delete or click the object then press the Delete button in the standard toolbar.

When you delete an object and it's the only object in a step, Designer will automatically delete the empty step but only after a Save or a Preview operation. This allows the addition of new objects to a step without disturbing the existing step order.

After a Save or Preview operation, empty steps will be deleted and the remaining steps re-numbered accordingly.

Deleting a step

Select an object in the step and click the Delete step button in the Presentation toolbar or right-click and choose Presentation > Delete Step.

Alternatively in the Page & Layer Gallery right click the layer and choose Delete Layer.
