New (Standard control bar or Ctrl+N)

Opens a new document.

New from Elements (Shift+Ctrl+Alt+K)

Opens Elements. Choose templates, smartshapes, stock photos and much more from the catalog's print, image and web folders.

Open (Standard control bar or Ctrl+O)

Opens a new editing window and loads a file into it. This file can be:

  • An .xar file to view or edit an existing Xara document,
  • Or any of the other import formats (see Importing & Exporting for a list of formats). This opens a new document showing the drawing in the file.

Open recent

A list of the most recently loaded or saved files. Provides a quick way to reload any of these files.

You can change the number of files in this list (refer to Customizing Designer for details).

Close (Ctrl+W)

Closes just the current editing window (not Designer). You are warned if the file has unsaved changes.

Save (Standard control bar or Ctrl+S)

Saves the selected document.

Save As

Lets you save the selected document under a different name or to a different directory or drive.

Load / Save Translation (Designer Pro only)

These options can be used to help produce documents translated into different languages. Save Translation exports all the text in the current document into an XML format that can be imported by external translation tools. The translation tools export a similar XML file, with the text replaced with the translated text. This can be applied to the same document in Designer using Load translation, and the text in the current document is replaced with the translated text.

Save All

Saves all loaded documents.

Save Template

Saves the selected document as a template document (see Customizing Designer).

Import (Ctrl+Alt+I)

Loads a file into the selected document. The file can be any of the import formats (see Importing & Exporting for more information).

Note the difference between Open and Import: both load a variety of file formats but Open opens a new document. Import loads the file into the current open document.

Import from Web Address (Ctrl+Alt+W)

Import text and graphics directly from web pages on the Internet into your document. Enter the URL (web address) of the site you wish to import into the dialog box.

Export (Ctrl+Shift+E)

Or right click and choose Export.

Lets you export the document in any of the export formats supported by Xara (see Importing & Exporting for a list of formats).

Export JPEG

Lets you export selected objects, a page or the whole document as a JPEG.

Export PNG

Lets you export selected objects, a page or the whole document as a PNG.

Export WebP (Web Designer and Photo & Graphic Designer only)

Lets you export selected objects, a page or the whole document as a WebP.

Export PDF

Lets you export the selected document as a PDF. See Exporting PDF files for more information.

Preview web page (Shift + F5) (Web Designer and Designer Pro)

Export and preview the current page of the current website document.

You can also preview your page by clicking the web page preview button on the Web toolbar.

 

Preview Website (Web Designer and Designer Pro)

Export and preview all the pages within your website. The pages are exported to the same location they were last exported to (overwriting .htm files as necessary without prompting), or to a temporary location if it has not yet been exported as a website. Then a browser window is shown displaying the page of the website from which you launched the preview window.

You can also preview your website by clicking the button on the Web toolbar.

You can navigate through the pages of your website using the navigation 'arrow' buttons at the top of the preview window, and click the 'home' button on the left to return to the page that was initially viewed in the preview.

 

Export Website (Web Designer and Designer Pro)

Also in Export toolbar.

Export the current document as HTML.

Publish Website (Web Designer and Designer Pro)

This performs the same operation as the button on the Web toolbar. It exports and then publishes the current document as a website to your web space.

If you haven't already entered the FTP details for your web space, the Publish tab of the Web Properties dialog will be displayed first. You can then publish the website to your web space. A progress indicator appears during the publishing operation.

Export Animation

Also in the animation toolbar displayed under the standard toolbar in an animation document.

Export an animation for use in a website.

Export image in slices (Ctrl+I) (Photo & Graphic Designer and Designer Pro)

This exports the selected objects as several sections (see Web Graphics for more information).

Document Info

This displays an information box about the selected document. It includes a comprehensive amount of information about the document including which fonts, together their permissions are included, as well as which Live Effects plug-ins are used.

Page Options

Also right click and choose Page Options.

Allows you to edit the page layout, size, etc.

Print (Ctrl+P)

Sets options relating to printing the document and lets you print the document (refer to Printing for more information).

Exit

Closes all windows and removes Designer from memory. You are warned if any files have unsaved changes.
